It’s that time of the year when randonneuring tails off. Holiday commitments and the short end-of-the-year days seem to conspire to keep us from carrying a brevet card around the countryside. There are exceptions: D.C. Randonneurs hopes to hold a RUSA 200K brevet this Saturday from Woodbine, Md., if the roads are not icy (details here). And, who could forget the R-12 chasers? I think 200K dressed in winter gear with potential night riding is a real challenge. But, whoever said this sport is for the rational?
Even if you’re not riding a brevet this month, why not combine the sport with the spirit of the season? I give you the 12 Days of Randonneurmas, where we look at thoughtful gift ideas for that special randonneur in your life. Or, (more likely if you are reading this) suggestions to loved ones who have no idea what to get you since you have everything already.
Today, the 1st Day of Randonneurmas, is devoted to the hardest working item in this randonneur’s wardrobe: the humble wool sock. Just about any brand will do, though MG and I are partial to Smartwool. Here we have Smartwool socks that MG got from her Dad, customized with little bikes. Now, that’s a great gift idea. Get those Sharpies out and show how much you care.
Tomorrow: more wool!
