WTOP Radio’s Kate Ryan blogs about bike commuting and the local cycling scene on her personal blog, Lane Changes. Last week I commented and asked her to look into Stan Miller’s death. Stan, a fellow D.C. randonneur, was hit and killed from behind by a suspected drunk driver who veered off the road onto the shoulder, where Stan was riding. The driver has a previous DUI conviction and charges in the case have yet to be filed, while police wait for blood alcohol tests.
Kate’s decision to write about Stan’s case brought a big response, including contact from the mother of 22-year-old Alice Swanson. She was killed by a trash truck driver who turned right and ran over her while she was going straight in a bike lane near D.C.’s Dupont Circle two years ago. No charges were ever filed against the driver.
Read Kate’s latest post here, which includes two reports based on her talk with Alice’s mom, Ruth Rowan. One is about the treacherous right hook.
